Summary of past, present, and future research activities of NASA with respect to applications of variable geometry in aircraft design and reasons for considering variable geometry; problem of design of wing pivot arrangement and basic pivot arrangements studied -- track type, type in which large-diameter bearing is used, and type employing clevis and pin; examples of 2 aircraft design studies showing wings at 3 sweep angles recommended for subsonic operation, supersonic cruise and low-level penetration; possible applications for additional variable-geometry developments in aerospace missions.
