Effect of power plant characteristics and takeoff and landing techniques on transition time and fuel is examined; assumptions were based on experience with European V/STOL aircraft, particularly regarding control requirements and piloting techniques; systems considered are lift turbojets, lift turbofans, remote lift fans, employing actuator disks of high disk loadings, installed or stowable in aircraft; results of estimates provide indication of acceptable transition techniques and their quantitative effects on aircraft using systems considered; techniques are reasonably simple and can be extended to STOL overload cases without change of principle.
