Fundamental aerodynamic, performance, and operational considerations which Boeing integrated into design of SST as result of 11,000 wind tunnel test hours on variable sweep; variable sweep SST factors and improved operational characteristics achieved, such as shorter takeoff and landings, lower takeoff and approach noise, and lower takeoff and landing speeds; smaller gross weight aircraft with smaller engines for given payload range mission is result of superior aerodynamic performance when compared to low aspect ratio fixed geometry approach; economics compare favorably with present subsonic jets.
