Design and testing of 5500-hp experimental engine, developed by Allison Div, General Motors Corp; engine incorporates light weight, tubular regenerator (heat exchanger) in which heat from turbine exhaust is transferred to compressor outlet air reducing fuel consumption; schematic flow diagram for regenerative cycle engine; reduction in specific fuel consumption of 35%, compared to current production nonregenerative turboprop engines, was demonstrated at cruise power test point; program provided background for Allison's new light weight T78 regenerative turboprop engine.
