Practice of foaming runways for aircraft emergency gear-up landings is effective way of spreading and holding water; factors that justify use of foam include reduction in extent of aircraft damage and in deceleration forces, reduction in friction spark and fuel spill hazards, and favorable psychological effect on pilots and passengers; analysis of numerous aircraft accidents/incidents revealed that foaming runway for other than normal gear-down configuration is beneficial in reducing fire potential.
