Digging of 4-mi-long drainage canal around New Jersey's Newark Airport is part of rehabilitation program by Port of New York Authority to increase capacity of Newark Airport by 50%; dredging difficulties were caused by garbage burning underground, 14 ft high bulrushes, and dumped glass and metal refuse; tidegate built inside two earth dikes will prevent flooding and serves as bridge for Port of New York Authority vehicles.
