Study undertaken by Motor Vehicle Technical Laboratory of University of Ghent to examine existing smoke meters and to determine any correlations between various scales of smoke blackening; final selection centered around Bosch EFAW 68 and Hartridge apparatus; description of original and modified Hartridge apparatus; results of laboratory tests show effects of exhaust system, quantity of fuel, injection advance, altitude and additives; analysis of 28,000 practical tests by "static" method using unmodified Hartridge apparatus.
