Paper describes general features of service and requirements for railway motive power, and how diesel traction has progressed to its present important position in covering different types of duties, with particular regard to British Railways; three main forms of transmission and application and selection of diesel engine are discussed; in considering engines for main line locomotives, experience to date with alternative applications of medium and high speed engines is compared; reference is made to fuel and lubricating oils, to cooling systems and water treatment, and to engine protective devices.
