Shipboard navigation system uses 150- and 400-MHz 2-min frequency-stable signals from satellite for position fix of ship; satellite transmits data defining its precise location as function of time; this information plus doppler shift in two frequencies is received on board by dual-input phase-lock receiver and fed to digital computer for processing; to reduce cost of shipboard equipment data can be stored and then telexed to remote computer; system provides unique combination of all-weather operation, worldwide coverage, and high-accuracy performance at relatively modest cost.
