Systematic mapping techniques providing detailed photographs and other supporting data, are essential to efficient use of earth-resource and weather satellites; paper describes method for determining discrete satellite orbits from which any planetary surface can be mapped in "optimal" manner, where optimality implies maximum area coverage with minimal overlap; analysis is applicable when sensor system is directed toward center of planet through mission; illustrations of method are given for earth mapping mission.
