Ships such as research vessels, cable layers and supply vessels frequently require high degree of maneuverability when operating on high seas at very low speeds or when stopped; to assist in this they are often equipped with Pleuger active rudder, or bow thruster, and in many cases both; bow thruster of special type to maintain adequate submergence in adverse sea conditions is housed inside vessel, and is lowered through hull to project beneath keel when required for operation; in working position it can be turned through 360°, and can be supplied with either fixed-pitch or fully controllable-pitch propeller; diagram shows arrangement.
