Study of levels of background noise and standards of cabin bulkhead insulation in existing ships led to assessment that suggested improvements in sound insulation might be desirable and were possible; materials commonly employed in cabin bulkheads tend to offer less sound insulation than their weight would suggest possible; this may be overcome by laminating these materials with denser material such as lead; with such laminates, much higher standards are attainable without any excessive weight, space or cost penalty; bulkheads described do not involve elaborate or costly erection procedures.
