Experimental approaches, reducing initial excitement of space and exaggerating factors of isolation, confinement, and sensory invariance, may compress amount of time needed for effects to develop in astronaut; but basic findings are best clues to behavioral problems in long-duration flight; relationship between drive arousal and performance is shown in graphical form; selection of personnel for whom aversive values are smaller, and positive values larger, than average; application of concept of arousal both to interpersonal relations and to task performance in space can point to appropriate selection, training, and spacecraft design features.
