Influence of environment, from pre-launch to touchdown, on heat shield design is discussed; heating histories (convective and radiative), pressure loading, and enthalpy profiles are presented for direct and indirect entry modes; effects of atmospheric uncertainties on heating and pressure loading of vehicle are evaluated; expressions are derived for determination of radiatively dominant entry regimes and optimization of nose radius for blunt entry vehicles in terms of experimental correlation constants; first-order structural weight optimization expressions are developed.
