Solar electric spacecraft require solar cell panels larger than spacecraft developed to date; effects of incorporating large solar cell arrays on vehicle configuration and parametric data helpful to configuration assessment -- volume requirements, panel sizes, deployed spans, and power levels for various launch vehicle shrouds -- are discussed; at Hughes space propulsion is based on modular concept, using number of small thrusters grouped to comprise array of engines; system reliability is provided by addition of standby units in event of in-flight module failure.
