Problem of re-entry is to reduce kinetic energy of re-entry vehicle while preserving structural integrity of spacecraft and health of astronauts on board; trajectory that minimizes some linear combination of heating and acceleration forces is desired one; many of previous investigations into this problem considered only planar re-entry; results indicate that optimal flight path is steep dive into dense regions of atmosphere, followed by gradual ascent to terminal altitude; it is in this dive maneuver that kinetic energy of vehicle is most quickly dissipated; possibility of eliminating severity of dive maneuver with some lateral maneuvering at high altitudes is considered; it is shown that lateral maneuvering during re-entry is not optimal with respect to criterion function defined; optimal flight path is planar.
