Analysis of factors highlights significant structural elements and changes in demand as they may contribute to systems design and development; attention is given to increasing consumer preference for immediately available and readily directed means of passenger and freight transport; however, present issues such as safety, air pollution, and rational urban land-space resource allocation must be reexamined to determine whether or not satisfaction of consumer choices and preferences remains goal of operating and developing transportation systems.
