Goals for future transportation systems include better use and arrangements of urban land, comfort, safety, capacity, flexibility, convenience, and speed; aesthetic qualities which enhance neighborhoods and districts, reasonable cost, and designs to accommodate all potential users; transport functions and factors to consider in optimizing system flexibility and service, i.e., automated vehicle systems, personal leasing systems, and user responsive systems; results of research carried out by MIT student group in Project Metran Study; glossary of terms, including Personalized Capsule (PERC), Automated Guideway, and Genie System were coined to describe subsystems tested for Boston Region.
