Deep submergence systems project was established in 1964 to develop capabilities in four areas -- submarine location, escape and rescue, search, and large object salvage and man-in-sea; first rescue vehicle of fleet of six, which has 5000 ft depth capability, available for service in 1968; large object salvage program will provide by 1971 ability to recover objects requiring deadweight lift of 1000 tons from depths to 850 ft; man's ability to live and work in sea at 200 ft depth level has been demonstrated in SEALAB II, with projected goal of 600 ft by 1970.
