Study indicates profitable unsubsidized American shipping system on North Atlantic can be designed, constructed, and operated; this is based on fact that range of present and future North Atlantic freight rates is expected to be between 40 and 80 cents per cubic foot, whereas ship analyzed can be profitable without construction and operating subsidy at freight rates as low as 23 cents per cubic foot; design chosen is fully containerized ship which carries 1200 containers (20 ft); ship length is 750 ft, beam 92.5 ft, loaded displacement 30,000 tons; sea speed is 25 knots at 80% power with cruising radius of 10,000 mi; twin-screw oil-fired steam turbines can deliver 60,000 shp.
