Analytical treatment for case of hovering flight results in simple closed-form solution that demonstrates that oscillatory lift under normal operating conditions can be less than 50% of its quasi-static value; it is shown that air loads in forward flight depend primarily on equivalent lift deficiency and downwash generated by steady-state blade vortex system; at low speeds, rotor wake can be drawn up into rotor leading edge and this is probably primary cause of transition roughness and noise encountered under certain flight conditions.
