Deep diving submersible called Alvin, built by Litton Industries for Office of Naval Research, has top speed of six knots and range of 20 to 25 mi, and operates at depth of 6000 ft; Alvin consists of pressurized personnel sphere surrounded by propulsion, power source, control, and research components, all enclosed in thin, fiberglass outer hull which is freely flooded with sea water; it is 22 ft long, has 8 ft beam, displaces 13 tons and has draft of 8 1/2 ft when riding on ocean surface; special features, instruments and equipment carried aboard, remotely controlled mechanical arm, etc; mother vessel is catamaran barge using two U S Navy surplus floats, constructed to use with Alvin.
