When optical communication over great distances in space becomes feasible, its utility may depend on mutual acquisition or reacquisition of responding stations; various factors can impede process, one of which is problem of distinguishing optical transmitter against starlit background; it is reasoned that this compels use of scanning method and concept of introducing spatial filter to assist acquisition is examined; account is taken of relative velocity of stations (velocity aberration), significant propagation times, and possible false acquisition of bright star; paper shows that spatial filter can be effective potentially; this is illustrated by analysis of imaginary but feasible situation.
