It is suggested that modern port can dispense with cranes, transit sheds, berthing structures, tugs, fenders, bollards, manual handling of mooring ropes, crews on mooring launches, and even with embarkation of pilots on board ships; suggestions are only presented with purpose of stimulating interest in study of new ways of enabling ports to fulfill their main function -- interchange of goods between inland and sea transport -- at minimum cost and with minimum delay.
