Research program on problem of emissions, sponsored by U S Public Health Service, was carried out at Southwest Research Institute; test facility was developed in which trucks and buses were operated on chassis dynamometer through operating modes that yielded maximum exhaust smoke and odor; system of exhaust dilution was employed to provide odor concentrations to panel of judges who rated intensity and quality of exhaust in terms of set of chemical standards; various control techniques were evaluated to determine their effectiveness in reducing smoke and/or odor; results obtained are evaluated.
