Automatic, easily instrumented, guidance technique is suitable for accomplishing soft, pin point, vertical lunar landing with nearly minimum fuel expenditure; use of modified proportional navigation results in total incremental velocity penalty of about 100 fps compared to total velocity increment required by minimum fuel landing trajectory; sensitivity of technique to random and bias sensor errors and to dynamic lags in sensor outputs and vehicle engine response is presented; critical sensor errors are range and range rate.
