Rumble defined as low pitched thudding noise different from knock and accompanied by engine roughness, heard at speeds above 2000 rpm; investigation of induced rumble at Ethyl Laboratories, shows that two factors related to fuel composition affect prevalence of rumble: tendency to form rumble-producing deposits and tendency to be ignited by hot deposits; use of phosphorus fuel additives to reduce rumble.
