Space ships will follow trajectories designed to make most of fuel used, gravitational forces and relative motions of planets; transfer made by means of Hohmann ellipse involves two impulses, one at beginning and one at end, path itself being ellipse tangent to both orbits, with gravitational center at one focus; diagrams of optimum paths; use of fuel in braking; disadvantage of Hohmann ellipse transfer is long waiting period at Mars for correct angular relationship.
