Underground concrete silo for rocket-fuel plant near Homestead, Fla, was built at grade as concrete caisson, by constructing bottom first and working upward, letting caisson sink under its own weight as excavation proceeded; pit where solid propellant will be cast in rocket motor, cured for about 1 mo and then test fired, is 177.5 ft deep and has ID of 52.5 ft; because weight of future solid-fuel rockets is too great for standard handling and housing equipment, cast, cure, test pit is key installation in plant of Aerojet-General Corp, Azusa, Calif, which will produce and test rocket boosters for exploration of moon and beyond.
