In 1960 study of automation and rationalization, carried out by Mitsui Steamship Co, and Mitsui Shipbuilding and Engineering Co, came to climax with cargo liner Kinkasan Maru which incorporated results of it; based on operating experience gained, Kasugasan Maru was built with more extensive features of automation and rationalization, not only in machinery installation but also on deck, for mooring and cargo handling equipment, etc; arrangements for these vessels are compared; study of shipboard labor status on Hakonesan Maru is noted; automation on oil tankers is considered with reference to supertanker Meitetsu Maru.
