Time required by Classification Societies for checking scantlings and for drawing approval may be considerable, and largely for hand computation and rule consideration; while current rules are not written with special regard to electronic computation, difficulties may be overcome; as example, results from electronic computation of scantlings for dry cargo ship are given; potential of such methods in combination with integrated design and construction systems seems to be great; rules on tape may, e.g., be used by yards to assess scantlings and approximate steel weights even before classification drawings are made, etc.
