It is suggested that primary responsibility of builder is to ensure that design embodies those principles which lead to minimum hull weight combined with optimum efficiency in propulsive performance and in fuel consumption, without detriment to owners' requirements and with regard to minimum first cost; aspects covered are hydrodynamics, machinery, strength and stability; reference is made to 3 hypothetical ships, each linked to operating requirements of particular owners; one is of 75,000 tons gross with quadruple screw geared turbine machinery, others are of 25,000 and 42,000 tons gross, both with twin screw geared turbines.
