Design and performance of propeller devices which have potentially good vibration and cavitation characteristics, including contrarotating and tandem propellers; conventional 5- and 9-bladed propellers were designed for comparison; results of model self-propulsion and cavitation experiments on single screw adaptation of SS Manhattan show 8% decrease in shaft horsepower for contrarotating propeller compared with original twin screw Manhattan; results also show that it is possible to design, with current theories, relatively efficient tandem propellers and propellers with large numbers of blades.
