One procedure proposed to accomplish soft lunar landing is to use high thrust main engine stage to remove most of approach velocity in open loop fashion, and low thrust vernier engine stage to control spacecraft; vernier stage employs terminal sensors to measure altitude and velocity, throttling to control descent rate, and may employ body maneuvering to control horizontal velocity; attempt is made to estimate interference that vernier rocket exhaust may ex ert on performance of Doppler and altimeter systems of lunar landing vehicle; it is found that exhaust does not significantly perturb any of systems.
