Most feasible method of maintaining high reliability with minimum impact on other system parameters, in particular weight, is to provide standby redundant system elements; weight penalties associated with various types of standby redundance are shown, i.e., for switched redundancy, where crew acts as monitor and switching element, manual backup to automatic systems, and standby, in-flight replaceable subassemblies; data is based on attitude reference, display, and reaction jet control electronics subsystems associated with flight control system for 30 days mission; factors to consider in designing for in-flight maintainability; advantages to be gained.
