Problem to determine minimum longitudinal maneuver capabillty that must be provided in re-entry vehicle for it to stay within upper (graze) boundary; 30° blunt half-cone lifting body and winged, 13 ° half-sphere cone served as aerodynamic models for investigation; analysis indicates that highest effective pitch rates required to keep either vehicle from exceeding chosen upper altitude boundary are on order of 5°/sec; skip-out can easily occur from failure to control pitch rate accurately or to start pitch maneuver soon enough.
