Problems involved in safe recovery and landing of vehicle from satellite orbit or space mission; there are 2 principal methods of achieving recovery from satellite orbits -- (a) pure ballistic re-entry as typified by Mercury capsule, (b) glide re-entry in which aerodynamic lift provides maneuverability, and in which peak heating rates are less than in (a), but total heat load is greater due to longer time involved in re-entry maneuver; characteristics of lifting and nonlifting re-entry vehicles; lifting re-entry and heating characteristics; problem areas. Shortened version of paper "Re-Entry and Landing" presented before symposium held by Brit Interplanetary Soc, London Nov 13, 1963.
