Paper follows one of 3 yr ago (See Engineering Index 1960 p 1462), and reports recent developments; successful service trials of lean atmosphere system of gas control led to its adoption as standard practice during tank cleaning on fleet of crude oil carriers (Shell Tankers Ltd); cargo tanks are first degassed by forced ventilation, which is continued throughout washing operation; portable fans are used on most ships, but centralized systems using blowers connected to main cargo lines for air distribution are fitted to new ships; operating experience with both arrangements is discussed. Before API Tanker Conference, May 4-8 1963.
