Supersonic aircraft bow-wave shape is altered by refraction when wave passes to ground level through earth's atmosphere made up of wind and temperature strata; acoustic ray tracing procedure is derived and programmed for computer to give ground level sound patterns for straight, level supersonic flight and arbitrary weather conditions; calculations for Mach 1.5 flight across 200 knot jet-stream wind of 40,000 ft altitude show that sound focus line is generated to lee of course which could cause objectionable disturbance on ground.
