Data relating to downwash impingement occurring in VTOL aircraft and helicopters are examined; interaction of nonuniform flow in ground boundary layer with bluff ground particles produces lift force which equals or exceeds particle weight; viscous decay, inviscid flow field, ground boundary layer, and forces on bluff body in nonuniform flow are examined; criteria established for particle entrainment in vicinity of impinging-jet stagnation point provide basis for scaling experimental results to variety of full-scale situations.
