Reference is made to projected Anglo-French supersonic airliner which is designed to cruise at Mach 2.2 (1450 mph); it has been concluded that basic aluminum structure is feasible at Mach numbers as high as 2.2; new problems raised by increasing Mach numbers are deterioration of material, effect of thermal stresses, and need for more elaborate and sophisticated procedures for full-scale proofing tests of air-frame; engines, systems difficulties, and noise problems are also discussed.
