Study of tailshaft failures indicated that major stresses responsible for these failures were, mainly, bending stresses resulting from propeller overhang and from varying torque and thrust of propeller blades acting in nonuniform wakes; fatigue machines were designed at American Bureau of Shipping laboratory so that known bending moment can be applied as couple simulating principal loading encountered by tailshafts in service; results are for 1-in. diam steel shafts; effects of various hub and linter interferences were investigated separately.
