Examination is made of way in which type of propulsion chosen influences operational economy, ordinarily understood by shipping company to be difference between freight proceeds and total operating costs; technical and economical considerations that interest both shipowner and shipyard are presented, including comparisons between steam and diesel propulsion, with reference to cargo vessels; it is suggested that operational results of vessel are determined not only by income and expenditure in terms of money and labor, but also by operating and servicing personnel.
