It is considered that fatigue of hull girder is not primary problem, but that geometrical discontinuities of ship structure create condition conducive to low cycle fatigue; approach to prediction of low-cycle fatigue for through cracking is presented, with emphasis on role of residual stresses in fatigue process; loading spectrum that ship may experience during its 20 yr of life; attenuation of low-cycle fatigue failures by utilization of post weld treatments, such as mechanically peening and grinding to contour in fatigue prone areas; influence of fatigue on brittle fracture.
