Sonobuoy is air-dropped sonar device that broadcasts noise of submerged submarine to patrolling ships and aircraft; up until recently, dye markers used to assist in locating drifting sonobuoys in ocean were made of powder and dispersed quite rapidly; to overcome this problem Motorola's Chicago Military Electronics Center developed dye cake which would disperse at controlled rate, permitting its life to be lengthened or shortened to meet any particular requirements; development of dye cake is described.
