Realistic crew survival goals to guide system design for manned space missions of various durations are derived from comparative examination of mortality rates characteristics; included are both accident mortality rates for number of occupations -- Airline pilots, farmers, construction workers. Air Force Officers, etc, and all-cause mortality rates; latter mortality rates are chosen for 25 to 45 age group, probable age group for astronauts; survival criteria are based on premise that astronaut need not be safer on space missions than his counterpart in earth-bound occupations.
