Description of experiment, performed on July 14 1965 by Mariner IV spacecraft after its closest approach to Mars; immediately before and following occultation, spacecraft's 2300-Mc tracking and telemetry signal traverses atmosphere and ionosphere of Mars; changes caused in frequency, phase, and amplitude of spacecraft's signal by passage through these media constitute raw data of experiment; geometry of occultation and trajectory of spacecraft; instrumentation employed with reference to Deep Space Instrumentation Facility radio system; data analysis relating to procedures used.
