General requirements of early Mars entry missions which are grouped into atmospheric probes, short- and long-lifetime landers; factors to consider in vehicle design for given mission such as sterilization of entry and/or lander vehicles, payload capabilities of launch vehicles, launch window and trajectory; communication with Earth could be accomplished by either direct link from lander to Deep Space Instrumentation Facility (DSIF) stations on Earth or by relay link through flyby or orbiter bus to DSIF stations on Earth; selection of power sources; Mars entry problem; and various design concepts.
