Results of program investigating damage on missile, satellite, or space vehicle by hypervelocity particle; problem is treated by examining wave motion in impacting projectile and shield, and heating effects are considered; theoretical and experimental results lead to following conclusions -- thin shield is effective because it fragments and spreads projectile and shield debris and, at high velocities, may melt or vaporize fragments; optimum shield to minimize penetration is one that melts or vaporizes majority of debris coming through shield.
