Need for system providing advantages of cryogenic pumping yet possessing reserve pumping capacity at ultra high vacuum for noncondensable gases is pointed out and system proposed which consists of three concentric chambers; inner containing test volume; space between outer two chambers is to be evacuated by pumping system consisting of mechanical pump, liquid nitrogen cold trap and diffusion pump; separate pumping system is used for initial evacuation of intermediate space and test volume; pressure, after pumpdown, should be approximately 10-10 to 10-11 torr in test volume and surrounding guard vacuum; system is capable of attaining ultrahigh vacuum and has capacity, at l-p, for handling large condensable and noncondensable gas loads which would be out-gassed from spacecraft equipment under test; description of instrumentation.
